Choosing a wallet for Base

What actually differs between the wallets that support Base, and the trade-offs behind each one.

·

Base is an ordinary EVM chain, so almost any Ethereum wallet works with it. Your Base address is your Ethereum address: same key, same 42 characters. There is nothing to create.

That makes the choice less interesting than it sounds. What differs between wallets is not Base support but everything around it.

Already configured

Coinbase Wallet and the Base app arrive with Base set up, which removes the one step that stops people. If you are coming from a Coinbase account, moving funds across is also the shortest path available.

The trade-off is the usual one for anything closely tied to an exchange: convenience now, and a relationship with a company that has your attention if not your keys.

Add it yourself

MetaMask is the wallet most applications are tested against, which matters more than any feature when something breaks. Rabby is better at showing what a transaction will actually do before you sign it, which is the single most useful safety feature in a wallet and the reason many people who can use either prefer it.

Both take the same six values to add Base. The network details page lists them and has a button that adds the network in one click.

Hardware

Ledger and Trezor sign Base transactions, normally with a software wallet as the front end. Your keys never reach the browser.

If you are holding an amount you would be genuinely unhappy to lose, this is the change worth making. It is the only item on this page that alters your risk rather than your convenience.

What actually protects you

The wallet matters less than what you approve with it.

Most losses onchain do not come from a wallet being broken. They come from someone signing an approval that gives a contract permission to move their tokens, on a site that looked right. A wallet that shows you what you are signing helps. A wallet that does not is where the trouble starts.

Set spending caps where the wallet allows it, and revoke approvals you no longer use.

Names

Basenames maps a readable name to your address, so you can hand out something legible instead of a long string. It works across applications that support it and is integrated into Coinbase's products, which is why it caught on faster than naming systems usually do.

It changes nothing about security. It changes how likely you are to paste the wrong address.

Frequently asked

Which wallet works best with Base?
Any EVM wallet works, because Base is an ordinary EVM chain. Coinbase Wallet and the Base app ship with it already configured; MetaMask, Rabby and the rest take about thirty seconds to add. The choice is less about Base support than about what else the wallet does well.
Do I need a separate wallet for Base?
No. Your Base address is the same address you already use on Ethereum, derived from the same key. There is no separate account to create and no new seed phrase to write down.
Can I use a hardware wallet with Base?
Yes. Ledger and Trezor both sign Base transactions, usually through a software wallet acting as the interface. For balances you would be unhappy to lose, this is the meaningful upgrade over everything else on this page.
